Greetings once again fellow SCMAFC Members!

This is the second in our probable series of irregular updates to keep you informed re: the status of the Club's \"Tupper Coupe Project\".

To recap a bit, - - further to the background information contained in our first status report, a goodly number of club members made the trip to Three Hills on August 19th to not only help Ted with his sale but to purchase a proliferation of Model A items and enjoy the camaraderie of the day.

As mentioned in report #1 the acquisition of many of the parts required has begun (wood kits, sheet metal items, etc., have now been received), and various sub-component work bees have been and will be scheduled in due course. Any club member wishing to learn or contribute to the project should contact those listed below in order to participate in whatever component of the project they may be interested in either helping with or learning about. With the frame, front and rear end assemblies, and the springs having now been dealt with they will be assembled shortly in order that this basic assemblage can be pushed around to facilitate full access to the clubhouse for alternate purposes.

Members currently working on sub-components of the project include:

Paul Chudek: - - Note: Besides ordering parts and working to assemble the aforementioned 'assemblage', Paul has scheduled an 'engine disassembly work bee/seminar' for 1:00PM on Saturday, September 1st at the Clubhouse. Besides Paul an additional couple of knowledgeable club members will be in attendance to explain the process and answer whatever questions may arise from those of you who decide to attend.

Colin Outtrim: - - besides painting the frame Colin has dealt with a number of sheet metal components to date and has also hosted a sheet metal procedures seminar. He is now involved with the restoration of the firewall and cowl assembly and having restored the front fenders may also consider upgrading the pair of rear fenders donated by Dan Adams.

Ron Rigby: - - has done the initial four wheels, the rear end, and the front end upgrades, and is now completing the spare wheel assemblage while trying to find a 6 volt windshield wiper motor he thought he had.

Jim Leew: - - did a great restoration of both springs and is now beginning to disassemble and upgrade the steering column assembly.

Dan Adams: - - has contributed quite a number of parts to the project and has taken both the generator and starter in order to restore them.

With he and Dianna having previously restored an award winning Special Coupe of their own we are hoping we can convince him to act as our 'Workshops/Work Bees Lead' when it comes to restoring the cab of the coupe.

Glenn Smith: - - has donated a project 'push around' wheel and is rebuilding both the transmission and the carburetor.

Dave Dodd: - - is restoring the distributor.

Keith Robinson and Paul Chudek: - - arranged to have the radiator rebuilt using components they supplied and thus saving the club +/- $500.

Barry Osborne: - - has taken the gas tank in order to have it steamed and re-lined.

More in due course but for now please don't hesitate to contact any of the aforementioned members with respect to participating in, contributing to, or learning about whichever aspect of the project you may be interested in.

This is the third in our series of irregular updates to keep you informed re: the status of the Club's \"Tupper Coupe Project\".

To recap a bit, - - subsequent to Ted Tupper's August 19th sale and the previous information contained in our first and second status reports, work on the project has continued unabated with a goodly number of club members involved.

The acquisition of many of the parts required has continued, Paul has held his motor disassembly session, Colin has made great progress with the sheet metal items, and the front and rear-end components and the frame have now been assembled to the 'push-around' stage while the drive train components 'from the fan to the U-joint' are being dealt with.

As previously noted any club member wishing to learn or contribute to the project can simply contact those listed below in order to participate in whatever component of the project they may be interested in either helping with or learning about.

Members currently working on sub-components of the project include:

Paul Chudek: - - During the course of its disassembly the need for major work was identified in order to restore the Coupe's original motor such that a discussion relative to the multiple options available in that regard was held at our September 12th meeting. Paul was then asked to review the pros, cons, and costs associated with utilizing either of the two primary options selected which were to utilize either of two motors available from Troy Dillabough and Paul himself. He has elicited Murray & Glenn's review assistance and their collective results will be discussed with a view to a decision being reached at our October 10th meeting. In addition Paul and his son David with the assistance of David's trusty welder have now modified a pair of long brake rods to serve as park brake rods.

Colin Outtrim: - - Colin has now restored the firewall and cowl assembly, currently has the pair of rear fenders donated by Dan Adams, and in essence has been and continues to be instrumental in the restoration of all of the sheet metal components excepting for the cab itself.

Dan Adams: - - besides contributing quite a number of parts inclusive of a coupe style spare tire carrier to the project, he has both the generator and starter in order to restore them. Also, as our resident 'Special Coupe cab/body specialist' he has volunteered to provide guidance to our participant's during the course of the Coupe's body restoration.

Note:

During the winter Snowbird season when we meet at the Woodridge boardroom instead of the Clubhouse, work on the project is expected to be reasonably limited to our various members working on the items which have been disbursed to their care. Work sessions on the Coupe body could also proceed in this manner if it could be relocated to a reasonably central shop or garage for the winter.

Our request therefore is with respect to whether any of our SCMAFC members either has or knows of a heated and lighted facility that might be available for this purpose.

Ron Rigby: - - further to his previous efforts has now completed the spare wheel assemblage, restored the flywheel housing, and will soon paint and assemble the bell housing/pedals unit while continuing to try and locate the 6 volt windshield wiper motor he thought he had.

Jim Leew and Glenn Smith: - - have volunteered to modify our 7-tooth steering column assembly into a combination 7-tooth (upper) and Gemmer 2-tooth (lower) unit. They would be more than pleased to host members interested in learning about this process and may even consider utilizing it as the topic of the day at one of the Club's 2019 Tech-Talk sessions.

Glenn Smith: - - has now rebuilt the carburetor, has also volunteered to rebuild the transmission, and has contributed a good U-joint to the project.

Dave Dodd: - - has now both restored and tested the distributor.

Keith Robinson - - besides his role in having the radiator rebuilt has donated the bell housing that Ron Rigby is currently working on.

Barry Osborne: - - had the gas tank steamed prior to relaying it to Colin to be mated with the firewall/cowl assembly. One discussion at our September meeting related to the merits of now lining the tank as well as having had it steamed. Gary Callander has indicated he has enough lining compound with which to do this.

Bruce Brander: - - has contributed a great set of 4 shock absorbers as well as the related arms and dog bones. Paul Chudek anticipates personally doing any cleaning and painting required as well as assembling them all to the 'initial assembly'. Just give Paul a call if you want to help!

Brian LeBlanc: - - as our Treasurer and financial guru has requested that those members incurring expenses in conjunction with their various Coupe project assignments submit their claims in a timely manner such that he can keep our project costs documentation current.

I rescued my father’s 1930 Model A from a life on jack stands. To keep it from regressing to its previous state, I plan to drive it regularly, which means it needs some work. All this leaves me in a conundrum: Do I make this car my own or keep it true to Dad’s vision?

My father and I differ on a handful of things, but we both agree on one thing about his Model A: If he had put it up for sale, it would have invariably become a hot rod. The coupe is complete and rust free. It would be a perfect base for a run-of-the-mill top chop and flathead install… and I just couldn’t watch it go through that. Stock Model As are too much fun to drive; this car doesn’t need to be cut up to be cool.

Which has me doing my latest mental gymnastics routine. I sit in the garage and look at the car while my mind flips and flops and tries to decide what to do with the car. The A needs work, and no small amount of it, to be safe and road-ready in earnest. The brakes could use attention, the wheel bearings are just about used up, and the front spindles are so loose the car catches a speed wobble at just 12 mph. Oh, and the exhaust leaks. Badly.

I see two options. I can keep this car true to my father’s experience with it and only replace the parts needed to keep it drivable and as stock as can be; or I can continue the patchwork history of the car and make it my own. Mainly, I want to do a few period correct modifications, but nothing beyond bolt-on parts—and nothing that couldn’t be finished by spring.

The look of the Model A with no hood is just awesome to me. When I first got it running the hood was off, simply for easy access and for photos documenting the process. I put it back on and realized I like the no-hood look enough that I pulled it back off again. The thought of adding a high-compression head, intake manifold for a single downdraft carb, and an exhaust header seems super cool to me. I could label and store the “original” parts on a shelf, and a weekend of work would.

Making these changes seems like a good decision to me for two reasons: The car isn’t factory original or correct, and I see no reason to freeze it in time as it is now. The coupe in my garage is a mishmash of parts but full of history. It’s these changes and their documentation over time that makes vehicles and stories like this so compelling. They become more than cars; they show the passage of time and become historical artifacts.

The best part about this Model A is that I have it now, and I get to tell its history while creating a new adventure for the car. I want the next chapter to be my tale of driving it and making it my own—while respecting the history it brings along. No V-8, no chop. Stock wheels and tires, and just a few little touches to make it mine. There are numerous factory-correct restored Model A Fords out there, and my struggle lies in my mentality that “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” But I can’t reasonably restore this one to perfect condition, so I might as well have some fun.

I guess I’ve made up my mind, but I invite your opinions in the comments below—who knows, you might sway me. No parts are on order yet, so there’s still time to reverse course.

It certainly looks like a nice old car. I would generally preserve it, but I have no problem with period correct modifications, such as head, intake and exhaust. I will say, in my humble? opinion, that the hood off look does not look as good as you think it does. Maybe it would be better after detailing the engine compartment, but it looks tacky in the current photos. I see several people telling you to convert to hydraulic (juice) brakes. I have no personal experience but I did notice when looking at the cars of the Model A touring society this past fall, that most of their cars had original mechanical brakes.

Feel free to ignore my opinions! I’m glad you are not hot rodding it!

Not sure how anyone could regret going original with a project like this. Having said that, I agree that bolt-on changes and saving original parts is a good option too. Be sure to keep as much of your dad as you can in what you do. Hopefully, part of the enjoyment of having it, is being reminded of him when you’re in it. It’s a good problem to have. Enjoy!

It’s always more difficult to bring a car back to factory correct, and so easy to bolt on parts from a catalog. Anybody can do the bolt on thing. It takes brain power to search for parts along with research to make it factory correct. If you take it back to stock you’ll be insuring that it has a future in a museum or with a purist. I vote to make it factory correct, and just buy yourself one that’s already been chopped up.

My two cents. Anybody can throw money at a car and turn it into whatever. Original old cars cannot be re-created. My barn find /survivor 28 roadster is getting new mechanical brakes, Winfield head, 97 carb but I am not even going to try to polish that original paint or remove some rust. At shows I encourage kids to sit in it and let their folks take pictures. Maybe I can help start a love for old cars in a youngster. But all of this is very subjective, I suggest you do what will make you happy.
