John's interest in antique cars began in his late 20's (1957-58) after he had moved from Nova Scotia to Port Alberni, BC. John and his fiancé Elaine were driving around and saw an old Model A for sale. It was 'love at first sight'. They hastily calculated that John was saving $150 a year by switching to a pipe and that was the very price of the 1928 Phaeton.

It was reliable, however, and served them as their first car for over a year. Bit by bit John would improve the Phaeton and did a full restoration in the late 80's and early 90's. He also began collecting old car pieces and bodies in those early years.

When the family moved to Three Hills AB in 1977, the first truck load included the 'A' and all the parts.

The next truck load brought the furniture! As John worked many summers for the County, often on remote back roads, he would keep his eyes open for old cars. From backyards to farmyards, from coulees to ads, he would scrounge for parts until he had quite a collection. It gave John great pleasure to talk 'A's with fellow enthusiasts and to search for just the right parts, which he often gave away.

John always enjoyed giving folks rides in his 'A', and never refused a local parade or a wedding or special event. The spring trip to Wetaskiwin and Reynolds Museum was always a highlight. Once, as they drove through a hailstorm on the return trip, John calmly pulled over, scooped the hail out of the open-sided Phaeton with his hands and carried on! Through the interest of half a dozen guys with antique cars in Three Hills he was connected with the Stampede City Model A Ford Club in 2004. He enjoyed the Christmas parties, the Tim Horton days and saved every issue of the Script!

As part of former member Leo DeSautel's estate the family contributed 16 boxes of miscellaneous parts to the Club to be sold to help augment the Club's coffers. The resultant sequence began in late 2017 when Al Shannon and Paul Chudek picked up the boxes involved and moved them to the Clubhouse where they were then stored for the winter of 2017- 2018.

On April 18th of 2018, at President Gord Rouse's instigation a group of 12 Club members met at the Clubhouse to both sort the parts and review our disposal options. Amongst the group was Yvon Picot who also contributed a number of Model A items for the Club to sell to its benefit. As it turned out about 3 or 4 of the DeSautel boxes contained Model A items, 4 items related to Model T's, and the bulk of the items involved, (many of them unidentifiable by our members), turned out to be 1950's era Chevrolet pickup parts that Leo had been accumulating on prospect of eventually buying a truck of that era to either upgrade or restore.

With the Red Deer swap meet being a mere two weeks away, and with Glenn Smith generously offering the use of a portion of his sale table space for the Club's use, it was agreed that unless items could be disposed of prior to that date everything involved would be hauled to Red Deer at month's end in an effort to sell as much of it as possible.

Surprise of surprises was that former Club President Hank Biesbroek agreed to give the Club a donation in exchange for the Model A parts involved, Brad Jarabak agreed to buy the few Tillotson carburetor parts, Barry Osborne bought the decrepit old trunk, Ross Benedict of the Model T's Club agreed to buy the Model T items, and Ray Watier of the 55 – 56 – 57 – Chevrolet's Club bought the complete Chevrolet truck parts inventory, - - thus, generally eliminating the need to haul much of anything to Red Deer, - - and of course, as so often happens, - - to end up hauling some portion of it back to Calgary for future disposal in one manner or another.

With the late spring and snow still on the ground this proved to be an excellent exercise with which to begin our 2018 'Touring and Related Activities' season!

John and Elaine Tupper had been active Club members, particularly in the Three Hills area segment of our Stampede City Club for approximately 22 years precedent to their passing in late 2017.

Because son Ted had previously met some members of the SCMAFC, his siblings endorsed his contacting the Club with respect to the family's general plan relative to John & Elaine's collection of Model A's and their Model A's parts inventory.

In essence while retaining key cars and components of their Dad's collection Ted and his siblings decided they would like to donate one of their Dad's 'Cars in Progress' to the Club, while simultaneously the Club expressed its willingness to help them to both inventory their excess of Model A parts and to help organize a summer of 2018 sale date.

Subsequent to discussions between Ted Tupper and the Club a small contingent of Club Members met with Ted in Three Hills on May 12th in order to both develop a basic inventory of the parts being offered for sale and to provide Ted with a bit of additional working space in his shop by retrieving the car being donated to the Club, - - as well as the proliferation of restoration parts that ended up accompanying it.

The net result is that per the sale notice contained on page 12 of this edition of the Script and the parts listing contained on the website, August 19th has been established as the on-site sale date, and the event will include an on-site barbecue per the way the Club has previously made lunches available at its various Yard Sales and other Club functions.

When you survive to your 90th Birthday, it’s an occasion to celebrate, especially if you are a car!

Our ’28 Sport Coupe, which we call Henry, is one of the few Model A’s to have the date stamp on the firewall.

It is clearly marked as 8-31-28, which means that on August 31, it has been around for exactly 90 years.

So on that day, we decided to honour the occasion with a chocolate Birthday cake and a toast in his honour.

Unfortunately, being 90, he doesn’t have any teeth to eat it with. He had to be content with a bit of bubbly poured into the radiator.

Afterward, we hopped in and drove out to buy ice cream cones.

Looking forward to celebrating the big 100 in 10 more years!
