On a nice spring morning the Club kicked off the 2018 touring season with a tour to the historic Blackfoot Diner in Inglewood with breakfast in mind at 9 AM. A number of members attended with their Model A’s and others in more modern vehicles. Good food and conversation was enjoyed by all!

The Blackfoot Diner was started in 1956 by Edna Taylor and over the years has served many Calgarians and some celebrities. Despite being quite busy on Saturday morning we found the service to be great, food was awesome and coffee was endless! And for those that have not been there for quite a while, yes, the model train still makes it around the restaurant on it’s wall mounted track.

On July 22, a small but intrepid group went for a tour over the Highwood Pass.

Those present were Gary, Bobbie & Michael Callander: Jim & Mary Callander; Dave & Vivien Dodd with grandkids; Ross & Caroline Rodman; Colin & Marilyn Outrim; Paul & Kathy Chudek and Jeff Brooks with his two children, Zach and Avery. There were 5 model A’s and 2 modern irons.

We gassed up at the PetroCan on Highway 22 and headed west. We made a short pitstop at the entrance to Kananaskis, then headed towards the pass. Near the turnoff to the Kananaskis Lakes, we had to make a quick stop for a large group of bighorn sheep that ran onto the road. That was exciting to see. Then we chugged up to the summit of the pass. It is reportedly the highest paved road in Canada. It was very busy there, but we made a stop to look at the scenery.

After that, we stopped for a nice lunch at a small picnic site along the road. This was followed by another stop at the forestry road store. Ice cream treats were enjoyed there and a group photo taken.

We continued on to Longview, where the group broke up and headed home their different ways.

The total round trip was about 200 miles, and fortunately required no roadside seminars.

It was a very enjoyable tour. Thanks to everyone that came!

Lots of good food and better company summarizes our annual trek to the Heritage Park Brunch. We had moved the event from the spring to the fall to avoid bad weather and conflicts with car events that are important to the club.

The day was perfect to drive our Model As and quite a few made it out. Even Murray was on time. The cars fit in well with the Wainwright Hotel, the train station and the busy street. About 40 of us attended. It was particularly good for Flo Robakowski who’s family has been an integral part of the club for many years.

Heritage Park set aside the Saloon for us alone. We had ample space and lots of opportunity to visit and, dare I say, eat a little bit. Same time next year?

Ford Motor Company sold more than one million Ford Model Ts in 1919, and each of those Model Ts used 100 board feet of wood for the parts such as frame, dashboard, steering wheels and wheels.

Because of the amount of wood that had to be used in the cars, Henry Ford decided he wanted to produce his own supply. He enlisted the help of Edward G. Kingsford, a real estate agent in Michigan, to find him a supply of wood. Coincidentally, Kingsford’s wife was a cousin of Ford – making the partnership a reality.

In the early 1920s, Ford acquired large timberland in Iron Mountain, Michigan, and built a sawmill and parts plant in a neighbouring area (which became Kingsford, Michigan).

The mill and plants produced sufficient parts for the car but generated waste such as stumps, branches and sawdust. Ford suggested that all wood scraps were to be processed into charcoal.

A University of Oregon chemist, Orin Stafford, had invented a method for making pillow-shaped lumps of fuel from sawdust and mill waste combined with tar and bound together with cornstarch. He called the lumps “charcoal briquettes.” Thomas Edison designed the briquette factory next to the sawmill, and Kingsford ran it. It was a model of efficiency, producing 610 lb (280 kg) of briquettes for every ton of scrap wood. The product was sold only through Ford dealerships. Ford then named the new business Ford Charcoal and changed the name of the charcoal blocks to “briquets”. At the beginning, the charcoal was sold to meat and fish smokehouses, but supply exceeded demand.

By the mid-1930s, Ford was marketing “Picnic Kits” containing charcoal and portable grills directly from Ford dealerships, capitalizing on the link between motoring and outdoor adventure that his own Vagabond travels popularized. “Enjoy a modern picnic,” the package suggested. “Sizzling broiled meats, steaming coffee, toasted sandwiches.”

It wasn’t until after World War II that backyard barbecuing took off, thanks to suburban migration, the invention of the Weber grill and the marketing efforts. An investment group bought Ford Charcoal in 1951 and renamed it to Kingsford Charcoal in honour of Edward G. Kingsford (and the factory’s home-base name) and took over the operations. The plant was later acquired by Clorox in 1973.
