Ah Spring, when a young man's fancies turn to thoughts of -- No not that, getting the Model A on the road!
With the warmer (?) weather comes the list of outdoor activities. To get these done requires access to the equipment in the garage. Leaving the garage open leaves your shiny Model A on display. Although it might invite some friendly discussions it also can also lead to potential theft.
People asking questions can also also be doing an inventory of the tools in sight. Just going into the house for a moment leaves an opportunity for theft.
Cameras and alarms are all well and good after the fact but do little to stop the theft. They can help identify the suspect but can not actually prove they took YOUR tools.
Having an identifying mark on your tools can be proof of ownership. Another consideration is dealing with the insurance company if your tools were insured. Proper insurance coverage can allow replacement. Proving your loss can be difficult if you do not have proof of the actual loss. A list of your tools including their brand names makes the process a lot easier. Even photos of the tools will help. Listing a "7/16" wrench does not provide the value. It could be a Dollar Store knock off or a Snap - on, a big difference in value.
It is more and more difficult to stop theft. It can also be difficult to prove actual loss. Keeping the garage closed can reduce the temptation of theft. Even having a garage sale can allow a stranger into your yard to see what you have.
Losing property to theft can be upsetting. Losing tools can delay getting your A on the road and missing tours.
Be careful and don't encourage theft.
