Fashions for the Model A era

As mentioned on the Editor's page reproduction outfits are the most practical for any amount of wearing. Today's fabrics are more durable and in most case easier to clean. Reproductions should look as much like the original as possible. The material should also have the same look as the original. Watch for the size and colours used in any prints. The more “homework” you do the better you will look posed next to your Model A.

Men's fashions do not change much from year to year. Some styles stay longer than others. Hats and ties were worn more often then they are today. Vests were also popular and were worn with a suit, sports coat, or even as an informal jacket. Many men who “dress the part” go for the sport look or casual summer outfit. This looks very good with a Roadster. Closed cars, Tudors and Fordors were family cars and that usually meant an “older” driver. A more conservative look was more appropriate. Dress slacks, plain shirt and tie, possibly with a plain vest that matched the pant were common. Shoes or even ankle boots were the footwear of the day. Running shoes or sneakers could ruin the era look big time.

What ever you choose remember this is all in fun. If you really get hooked then you have a lot of research ahead of you. There is lots of information available. One great source for the “right look” is the old family photo album. Look for pictures taken during the late 20's and early 30s.

Remember not everyone could afford to buy the newest most expensive fashions of the day.

Those that could probably didn't drive Model A's. The A era was a hard time for many people and although there were some very rich people not everyone dressed in the fancy styles shown in magazines and catalogs.

Some of what I have said here may get me in trouble with the Fashion Judges but this is not intended as a competition event. What I am suggesting is recreating a look that existed when the Model A was new. Think of it as setting a scene that would be difficult to say when it set. Just imagine a black and white or sepia tone photo of you next to were A that looks like it was taken in 1929 or what ever year is appropriate. As I said this is for fun. Enjoy the research and take the time to put it into context with the times. Life was a lot different then.

All comments welcome. I will welcome all suggestions and submissions.
