On Saturday, March 8, about 14 club members and a couple of guests gathered at Keith Robinson’s property in west Springbank for a workshop on welding. Over the course of the day we enjoyed displays, lectures, demonstrations and some hands-on learning.
Larry Kynoch, a member of the Alberta Pioneer Auto Club and the Model T Club, conducted most of the day’s activities. Larry had volunteered to share his 20 plus years of welding experience with members of our club.
The session got underway at about 10:30 with Larry giving an overview of the range of types of welding from soft and silver soldering to TIG and MIG techniques. The emphasis was on MIG welding and covered the basic components offered by the manufacturers including the transformer, rectifier, circuits, wire drive, spindle, gas circuit and cooling fan. Larry also dealt with accessories such as clips, gloves, helmets and grinders. Gases, tanks and regulators were covered as well as a thorough description of precautions, safety techniques and practices necessary for good operation.
The students were also treated to a presentation by Murray Walkemeyer who demonstrated his expertise on some of the techniques needed for restoration welding.
A big thanks to Keith Robinson for hosting the session and keeping his shop warm on one of the coldest days of the winter. Special thanks also to Larry and Murray for coming out and sharing their time and knowledge.
